When I was in school I was always interested in the history lessons as the teacher I had was very good at telling the stories, making it fun to listen to. I must admit that I really can’t remember much of what I learned during those classes and only remember him saying that everything which happens in America will happen over here as well, just five years later. It was very interesting and for a while seemed to be a valid theory. Anyway I’m sure you are reading this to find out my thoughts about Ben Affleck’s third movie in the director’s chair, Argo about historic events which took place in Iran. Now I am pretty sure this was never discussed in the history lessons I took, so going into this movie (just like any other) I had no idea what had happened and was ready to be surprised. No Mercy (2010)
I love it when I come across a movie list of a specific genre and see movies I never heard of. A couple of weeks ago I read one about Korean movies and had seen all of them except this one. It’s a movie that I hadn’t heard of at all, so I was very interested to check it out and had high hopes when I started watching this crime movie. Continue reading
Seven Pounds (2008)
There are some movies that manage to grab your attention within the first few minutes and that don’t let go until they end. A very effective way of doing so is showing something which will happen later in the movie. In that respect Seven Pounds immediately had me and I was glued to the screen in this story about one very unique man. Continue reading
The Raid (2011)
Months have passed since I read the first raving reviews of The Raid. My patience was being tested and couldn’t wait to finally see this movie. I was afraid that my expectations would be too high, so prepared to be disappointed. I had seen (and reviewed) Gareth Evans’ Merantau a while ago. The story of that movie wasn’t too good, but it delivered some great action and showcased the fighting skills of Iko Uwais. Although he is a part of a team here, the story does revolve around him. Continue reading
Sherlock Jr. (1924)
Who’s your favorite silent era comedian? It usually comes down to either Chaplin or Keaton and if you have followed the best actors relay race, you will know I added Chaplin. You see, I have watched a lot of Chaplin movies, but when it comes to Keaton I only saw this and The General (which is great btw), making the choice for Chaplin obvious.
“Is he my favorite though?” is what I started asking myself after watching Sherlock Jr. Continue reading
Intouchables (2011)
Recently I visited the PAC festival, which is regularly organised by one of the biggest cinema chains in the Netherlands. It shows previews of quality movies that will be released in the coming months. One of the five movies that was shown was Intouchables. A French movie I hadn’t heard of before based on a true story. Continue reading
Nuovo Cinema Paradiso (1988)
As I’m a movie blogger it won’t be a shock to find out that I love movies, but it might be sometimes difficult to explain exactly what that feeling is to someone who doesn’t love them as much. I now no longer need to find words for it, I just point to this film. If you don’t understand that love after watching this then I’m sure you will never get it. Continue reading
Schindler’s List (1993)
There are some movies which you know you really have to see, but somehow never had. The reason I didn’t watch Schindler’s List before was mainly because of its heavy subject matter and it’s length. Before you watch it you already know it’s going to be tough to watch and that you won’t be feeling very happy afterwards. It might have taken some years, but now I finally have seen it and what an amazing piece of cinema it is. Continue reading
Witness for the Prosecution (1957)
Having recently watched and being ultimately disappointed by The Verdict, bbbtoby (you can check out his site here) on Twitter suggested watching this movie as according to him it’s one of the best coutroom dramas. As I can really enjoy these type of movies I was looking forward to checking it out. Continue reading
Life is Beautiful (1997)
There are some movies that have something magical. Something that keeps you glued to the screen and care a lot for its characters. La Vita e Bella (Life is Beautiful) is one of those movies that manages to enchant you. It initially is a very comedic and fun story, but slowly drama creeps into the movie and after watching it you will be heartbroken. Continue reading
