Sex Tape (2014)

Review Sex Tape

Sex sells, which isn’t a surprise. Whole advertising campaigns are based on it and some directors (Michael Bay is the first one I thought of) gladly show the female curves and tough men every opportunity they get. When it comes to comedies it has also been a subject that has been used a lot. From the exploitation movies of the seventies to movies like Porky’s during the eighties all the way to the Apatow movies of the last couple of years. Sex Tape is now playing in the cinema and is very clear about its story. During the last couple of years many celebrity sex tapes have surfaced and there are a lot of couples who decide they want to spice things up and record their love-making. Continue reading

Sabotage (2014)

Review Sabotage

When you grow up watching action movies starring actors like Jean-Claude van Damme, Steven Seagal, Sylvester Stallone en Arnold Schwarzenegger, then action-DNA automatically pumps through your blood. Because of that I have kept watching movies by some of these actors despite them slowly going towards their seventies. Of course this means you can not expect the same movies as when they were younger, but with Sabotage Schwarzenegger still delivers a violent action thriller. Does that mean nostalgic feelings or disappointing melancholy? Continue reading

The Unbelievers (2013)

Review The Unbelievers

The world’s religions have made (and are still making) a huge impact on the world. Wars are being fought about it and people are still discriminated because they don’t have the same religion. I see it as something which could be guide you in your life to make the right decisions, even though I’m not religious myself. The two men who are being followed in this documentary, scientists Richard Dawkins and Lawrence Krauss, want to use science to prove that there is no God and regularly discuss this with religious people. Cold Comes the Night (2013)

Review Cold Comes the Night

Lots of people are probably not aware that Breaking Bad actor Bryan Cranston already has had a long career. Looking at his IMDB profile he already has 132 TV show and movie titles to his name. Thanks to his role as the meth making scientist in Breaking Bad he became well-known and he appeared in some high-profile movies like Drive, John Carter, Total Recall, Argo and Godzilla. In most of these movies he had supporting roles, but in this movie the 58-year-old actor is starring, together with Alice Eve. Continue reading

That Awkward Moment (2014)

Review That Awkward Moment

The concept behind making a succesful romantic comedy seems quite simple: Cast some good-looking, popular men, add love interest(s) and create some obstacles that prevent the love to blossom into a relationship. That Awkward Moment seems to have all those ingredients right: The men here are Zac Effron, Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station) and Miles Teller (The Spectacular Now), the love interests Imogen Poots , Mackenzie Davis and Jessica Lucas and the main obstacle here is the agreement the three men have made that they will stay single. With the basic ingredients right does it have enough spice to make this a movie worth watching? Continue reading

Saving General Yang (2013)

Review Saving General Yang (2013)

Althought the average moviegoer will mainly watch movies coming out of Hollywood, there are a lot of very good movies made in other countries. The past couple of years I really started appreciating South Korean films. Movies like My Sassy Girl, Old Boy, The Host of No Mercy are just some examples of movie I really liked. The Chinese movie industry has also a lot of amazing films. Most people will know Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but there are tons of other movies to check out like Hero, Curse of the Golden Flower and the many Ip Man films. I have to admit that I should be watching more Chinese made movies, but it is something I don’t get around to often because there is such an overwhelming supply of movies I want to check out. Continue reading

12 O’Clock Boys (2013)

Review 12 O'Clock Boys (2013)

If you have been following My Filmviews for a while you know I am a big fan of documentaries. I have had the feeling that during the last couple of months there weren’t as many documentaries released as normally. It might be that I have missed a lot of news about them, but I felt there was a bit of a drought. So I was happy to see this one being released. The pictures I saw about it looked exciting, with people on motorcycles popping wheelies. So was watching it as exciting?

Last Vegas (2013)

Last Vegas review film

Star Power is very important to a lot of Hollywood movies. Famous names usually guarantee a lot of people wanting to head to the cinema. Looking at Last Vegas it has heaps of them: Morgan Freeman, Robert de Niro, Michael Douglas and Kevin Kline. These men are all Oscar winners, so no reason to doubt their acting abilities. As these men are all getting older it is not a strange choice to make a comedy which makes fun of their age. Other older actors have done the same in the past (examples are Al Pacino and Christopher Walken in Stand Up Guys, but also the fatehr of Michael Douglas did this in Tough Guys in 1986). Do these men succeed in providing the laughs? Continue reading

Life Tracker (2013)

Review of Life Tracker

As a movie blogger I regularly am contacted by producers or directors if I am willing to watch their movie. With hundreds of movies being released each year it can be hard for smaller films to get any attention and unless the movie does not appeal to me I often agree to check out their work. As you are in close contact with someone involved in the movie I always feel some pressure in trying to remain as objective as possible. You know that someone has spent countless hours making their movie and when you do not like it you do not want to only be negative, as I do think each and every movie has potential, which sometimes just is not realised. At the end of the day I am only giving my own opinion and it’s up to others to agree or disagree with me.

Life Tracker is an indie film which deals with very interesting subject matter: What if it was possible to determine what would happen to your health and life (including the day of your death) based on your own DNA? How would this affect you and the people around you? This “found footage documentary” tries to provide some possible answers. Continue reading
