If someone asked you to name some long running movie franchises, Resident Evil probably wouldn’t be one you’d think of. Still this movie series started in 2002 and this one is the sixth installment. Despite the fact that these movies didn’t receive many positive review, it managed to appeal to a specific audience and still made more than its production budget back. So The Resident Evil movies might not be well-regarded, but they are known for action, horror elements and of course Milla Jovovich as the protagonist. Like the title already makes clear, this is the last movie in the series (even though a reboot has already been announced). Continue reading

Loveless (2017) – Review
Yesterday the 17th edition of the PAC-festival took place at one of the biggest cinema chains in the Netherlands. It’s an event I always enjoy visiting as the atmosphere is fun (usually running into some other movie bloggers), movies are shown which won’t be released for a couple of months and usually there are at least two or three titles which are awesome. This time the festival opened with the Russian movie Loveless. Continue reading
War Machine (2017) – Review
In general the shows which Netflix releases are of high quality and often can’t be missed. Unfortunately that isn’t the case for the movies the company has released under its name (with an occasional exception). War Machine looks like an interesting film, with Brad Pitt starring and it’s directed by David Michôd who previously was responsible for the great Animal Kingdom. The movie also has a number of surprising cameos from famous actors and actresses. Is this great Netflix movie? Continue reading
Alien: Covenant (2017) – Review
The original Alien franchise for a long time had been an unknown series when it came to my movie knowledge. Although I had bought the beautiful DVD-set with the Xenomorph head in 2006, it would take four years before I started watching them for the first time. The first movie made a big impression because of it sublime buildup with constant tension and where you felt the fear the crew was going though. The sequel was completely different but also good, but it was the original which conquered a special place in my heart. Part 3 and 4 couldn’t manage to leave a lasting impression and it would take until 2012 (let’s forget Alien vs Predator) before a new Alien movie came out in the form of Prometheus. Although many didn’t like the film, I really liked it because of the search it started. Where did humanity come from? That was the question the crew of the Prometheus was trying to answer and although it never was fully answered I hoped that Alien: Covenant would. Continue reading
Fist Fight (2016) – Review
It is the last day of school and at Roosevelt High School it means that the students are allowed to pull pranks all day. This results in a school at which not everything goes as it normally does and it is a challenge for the teachers to “survive” the day as anything can happen with either their car or during their classes. Andy Campbell (Charlie Day) doesn’t realise at the start of the day what his will look like, but it will be a lot worse than he can imagine. Grumpy history teacher Ron Strickland (Ice Cube) asks him to help him, but because of what happens next it gets Strickland fired. He wants revenge and challenges Andy to a fight, after school, outside. Continue reading
What is Cinema? (2013) – Review
For more than 20 years Chuck Workman was editor for the Oscars. He was responsible for the various montages celebrating the medium of film. So in those years he has seen a lot of imagery and with this documentary he has created a visual essay in which he takes a look at the history of film, the development it has gone through while various directors are interviewed, like Alfred Hitchcock/Robert Altman (archival footage), David Lynch and Michael Moore, who tell what it means to them. All the while you are shown footage from maybe hundreds of movies. Continue reading
Spectral (2016) – Review
The amount of new content Netflix puts out is sometimes hard to keep up with. Some weeks ago they released the Netflix Original movie Spectral. It is a science fiction/action movie with supernatural elements. When the army is fighting a war in Slovenia one of the soldiers is killed in a mysterious way by something which isn’t visible to the naked eye. Dr. Mark Clyne (James Badge Dale), a researcher at DARPA, is asked to analyze the event, which was recorded by a special system, and find a solution. Are the things they are seeing advanced camouflage suits or are they dealing with something completely different? Continue reading
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (2016) – Review
The past movie summer wat disappointing for a lot of people and many films didn’t manage to make as much impact as the studio hoped. Some even didn’t manage to really show up on people’s radar and for me it was this sequel to the movie from 2014. I thought the original movie was very disappointing, so I didn’t feel any need to head to the cinema to watch it. But as it is available on DVD I decided to give it a chance as I suspected it would probably have some enjoyable action sequences.
The Get Down: Season 1 – Series review
When I first heard about The Get Down earlier this year I was really looking forward to it. The first images looked good and also the description of the show sounded interesting:
“The Get Down” is a mythic saga of how New York at the brink of bankruptcy gave birth to a new art form. Set in New York in 1977, this music-driven drama series chronicles the rise of hip-hop and the last days of disco -_ told through the lives, music, art and dance of the South Bronx kids who would change the world forever.
As a fan of hip hop this was a setting that immediately was something I wanted to know more about. Through the years I’ve learned a lot about the music, how it developed and seeing that in the form of a show on Netflix seemed awesome. The show has been written and produced by Baz Luhrmann, who has done things like Romeo+Juliet, Moulin Rouge and The Great Gatsby in the past. Someone who is very capable to show music in an exciting way which is visually pleasing. Besides that, New York in the seventies is a fascinating setting. Gangs were still very active (the documentary Rubble Kings is a good one to learn more about that). There was a lot of crime and buildings were set ablaze in order to collect insurance money. With a budget of 10 million per episode my expectations were high when I started watching this six part first season. Continue reading
Special Correspondents (2016) – Review
Ever since The Office Ricky Gervais has been a popular comedian who has had a lot of success through the years. Even though I’ve tried several times to look at some of his work and have never really been able to enjoy it of think it’s funny. Still every few years I try something new from him just to see if I have to change my opinion. When I found this Netflix movie in which he stars together with Eric Bana I decided to give it a chance. Should I have done that? Continue reading
