When a movie is immediately released on Blu-ray/DVD in the US without having appeared in theaters that is usually a bad sign. It often means the quality isn’t very good and that the studio did not have enough confidence to spend money on advertising and making their money back. Over here in the Netherlands the movie, which is starring Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games, The Expendables 2) and Dwayne Johnson (Fast & Furious, Pain & Gain, The Scorpion King) will be played at the cinema. It made me wonder if Empire State, which is based on true events, good enough to appear on the big screen or if it should be sent to the bargain bin immediately. Continue reading

Devoted to the Game (Bingo Documentary) (2003)
Youtube is a cool website to browse as you can easily lose track of time watching videos with different subjects. As I was browsing, I came across this small documentary about bingo called “Devoted to the Game”, which was shot in 2003. The description of the video says that it was made as a final project for a college film class. When it comes to documentaries, I’m willing to watch them on any subject. Since this one was about bingo, I decided to give it a chance even if it was just to find out if it’s only the elderly that plays this game and why people enjoy it so much. I was surprised to find out that even young professionals are fond of this game because they can easily access it through CheekyBingo.com and other bingo sites simply by logging on their laptop or iPad. Red Planet (2000)
Mars has long been an interesting resource for movies. Usually that means that aliens are coming from the planet to attack the earth. Red Planet doesn’t take that idea and is set more in reality. It’s about a group of people sent to Mars. Earth is slowly becoming inhabitable and the seeds had been planted to create an atmosphere to make it a new home, but things didn’t go as planned and a crew is sent to the planet to find out why. I never saw Red Planet before and when it showed up on my VOD service I decided to check it out. Continue reading
Jack the Giant Slayer (2013)
I think it is funny how specific types of movies always seem to arrive in waves. In the past this happened with Pixar/Dreamworks movies (Bugs/Antz, Finding Nemo/Shark Tale), but it also happens in genres. One of them is the fairytale one which I guess started with Alice in Wonderland. Other fairytale movies followed (Snow White and the Hunstman, Mirror, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters to name just a few). It seems like everyone looks what might sell and try to duplicate it, unfortunately with mixed results. Jack the Giant Slayer has been in development since 2005 and is a new interpretation of Jack and the beanstalk story. Continue reading
Cloud Atlas (2012)
The Wachowskis made a big splash in the movie world when they made The Matrix, which blew away audiences. It was visually stunning and the siblings have made some interesting movies after it, like V for Vendetta and Speed Racer. With Cloud Atlas they again try to bring a spectacle to the screen, but will it wow audiences? Continue reading
Amour (2012)
There are some movies which you are able to appreciate for their looks and there is hardly anything you can fault, but still you end up not liking the movie. Unfortunately Amour is a movie where I had that feeling. Continue reading
Save the Green Planet (2003)
Being in the right mood is very important when watching a specific type of movie. Get it wrong and you can sometimes don’t like movies which you would love. After watching Save the Green Planet I wondered if it was one of those cases where it was something I should have watched with a different mindset. Continue reading
Ill Manors (2012)
When I first saw singer/rapper Plan B perform on a Late Night with Jools Holland I really liked the sound of his music. His second album, The Defamation of Strickland Banks, on which he sings is still a joy to listen to. Ben Drew (his real name) is multi talented though as he also decided to try his hand at writing and directing Ill Manors, a very dark crime movie. Continue reading
The Fall (2006)
After watching Tarsem Singh’s Immortals, which had some stunning looking imagery, I was interested to see more of his work. I had bought The Fall a couple of months ago and hadn’t seen it yet so with my appetite wet I looked forward to jumping into another beautifully shot world. Did it offer more beauty and if so, is that enough? Continue reading
Steamboy (2004)
Steam. You might think the good old days when it was used to propel trains and boats are over and that it’s a technology of the past, but you’d be mistaken as it’s still used in nuclear powerplants to get the generators going. To me it’s amazing to think that such an old idea is still in use today. Steamboy is an anime in which steam is seen as the future and can be used for progress. Continue reading
