Profile of a Killer (2012)

Review Profile of a Killer

Serial killer movies are usually quite predictable. They start out with a murder, some detectives get on the case and pretty soon after another body is found and a pattern is discovered. The police and the killer will play a game of cat and mouse trying to outwit each other all ending in a showdown. Profile of a Killer also is a movie about a serial killer, but in this case it twists that well-known storyline into something slightly different. The question is if that results in something worth watching? Continue reading

After Earth (2013)

Review of After Earth

M. Night Shyamalan once was considered to be the next Spielberg. Unfortunately he has made a couple of movies which were receiving a lot of negative reviews. The once promising prince had turned into a frog and a lot of people have written him off. Is After Earth the movie which can kiss him back into a prince or even a king? Or Is it a case of the emperor’s new clothes? Continue reading

R.I.P.D. (2013)

review of R.I.P.D. (2013)

As a movie blogger you carry around knowledge about movies. Whether or not you like it that knowledge will automatically activate whenever you watch any movie. You will notice specific techniques and sometimes recognise certain situations as they remind you of other films you saw before. It is next to impossible to ignore that and that’s something R.I.P.D. definitely has been struggling with if I were to believe the few reviews I’ve read of the movie. Continue reading

The Iceman (2013)

The Iceman movie review

I remember that a some years ago I first heard the story of Richard Kuklinski, a hitman for the mafia who has admitted to have killed over 100 people. He was interviewed and this was a man who talked about his killings without showing much emotion. He sometimes made strange movements with his jaw while talking, but besides that you’d think he was just talking about the weather. He got his name not because of his lack of emotions (even though that also fits him nicely), but because he sometimes froze his victims in order to make it impossible for the coroner to discover the real-time of death. Even though he is no longer alive, his fascinating story has been turned into a movie starring Michael Shannon. Continue reading

Promised Land (2012)

Review of Promised Land starring Matt Damon

Everyone has got actors and actresses they will watch in almost any movie they are in. I have several of them and one of them is Matt Damon. Looking at his career there were some movies that weren’t as good as others, but I do always enjoy his performances. Promised Land is a movie about fracking. If it wasn’t for the documentary GasLand, which I watched last year, I wouldn’t have an idea about what it was. It is a way to extract natural gas from the ground using a combination of chemicals. As that documentary showed, the effects of it can be devestating. It showed that people effected were able to put a flame next to their tapwater and it would catch fire. In Promised Land Matt Damon, together with Francis McDormand, play two gascompany representatives. Their job is to have people sell the rights to their land for a nice bag of money so gas can be extracted. Continue reading

Trouble with the Curve (2012)

review, recensie, bespreking

A McDonalds hamburger. That’s the first thing I thought of after seeing Trouble with the Curve during the 7th PAC festival in which movies are previewed which will be released over here in the coming months. All of movies were announced ahead of time except this one. I was hoping I’d get a chance to already see Looper, The Master or Killing Them Softly. So a movie about baseball was not something I was expecting, but since the movie has some well-known actors like Clint Eastwood, John Goodman, Robert Patrick, Justin Timberlake and actress Amy Adams I was interested to see it. Continue reading

Tony 10 (2012)

review, movie, tony ten

When parents separate it’s something that has a big impact on the children of the family. It’s difficult for them to understand and deal with. Tony 10 is a Dutch kids movie which tries to tackle the subject. It does so in an interesting way telling the story of Tony (who’s almost 10) and who thinks his father is having an affair with the queen. Continue reading

Le Havre (2011)

Movies allow you to be transported into different worlds. Even when they seem to be set in a realistic world, that world can be distorted and turned into something surreal. It’s something that can surprise the viewer or throw them off-balance. Director Aki Kaurismäki shows that he can turn the city of Le Havre into a setting for a modern fairytale. Continue reading

The Grey (2012)

Liam Neeson has made quite the comeback as an action star ever since he appeared in Taken. The Grey places him in an ice cold environment with his enemies in the form of the cold weather and an angry, vicious pack of wolves. Does it have you howling at the moon or does it make your heart as cold as the snow this takes place in? Continue reading

Like Water (2011)

Like Water MMA documentary review

As stated in my Warrior review I’m not a fan of UFC as I think the sport is just too brutal. Although the fighters are very skilled it looks way too much like a street fight. Anderson Silva is one of those fighters. He’s from Brazil and has had an amazing career in the MMA as he is able to win his fights very quickly and seems unbeatable. At the time of filming for this documentary he had successfully defended his title 6 times. His last win was controversial as he kept running around his opponent, never engaging in the fight. The UFC president refused to personally put on the belt and told Silva’s manager to do it. With a lot of fans of the sport against him because of it and a new challenger (Chael Sonnen) he has to show why he is the best. Continue reading
