National Parks Adventure (2016) – Review

National Parks Adventure review

Omniversum might be one of the most unique cinemas in the Netherlands, with its dome shape it has an IMAX screen which you won’t be able to see completely, no matter where you sit. It makes watching a movie a real experience. The last time I visited this cinema was back when I was a little boy. Which movie I saw there I can’t remember, but I recall a scene in which was shot from inside a driving car and the experience made me a bit nauseous. Last week it was the first time I went back for the presentation of the newest movie which is now playing there: National Park Adventure. Continue reading

Everest (2015) – Review

Review Everest

We all, in one way or another, are looking for boundaries. Of course as a kid we often go past boundaries set by our parents, but in life we also try new things to test ourselves. We want to see what we are willing to do, to face a challenge. How far someone goes with that is different for everyone. I never felt the need to tie a huge elastic band to my feet and jump of a bridge, but a lot of people need that shot of adrenaline and some go even further. Some don’t seem to realize that they are gambling with their life, because I don’t understand what motivates them. This was also the case for me with Everest. Continue reading

Vie Sauvage (2014) – Review

Review Vie Sauvage

Although I love nature, I’m really a city person. So I really enjoy walking through a forest, but at the end of the day I want to sleep in a luxurious hotel and not in a tent. Of course I’ve slept in hammocks abroad a couple of times, but I was always glad to make the journey back to stay in a real house or hotel again. The protagonist in this French movie doesn’t need all the luxury and prefers to live in forests and eat what’s available. Continue reading

Advantageous (2015) – Review

review Advantageous

Technology is rapidly changing our society making some jobs which still existed in the previous century obsolete. So it’s not that hard to imagine that with the development of artificial intelligence, but also by introducing simple technical systems, people won’t be very relevant anymore in various areas. Advantageous is set in such a future, having made it harder to find jobs, especially for women. Continue reading

Whatever your opinion is about director David O. A Perfect Day (2015) – Review

Review A Perfect Day

Although we all would prefer to see an end to the wars in the world, it seems like an unfeasible dream. Even if a ware ends somewhere, there is another place where another one begins. A Perfect Day takes place in the Balkans during the nineties, when the war is almost over and the UN is doing everything possible to make the area safe again. A Doctors Without Borders team works in the area and has the task to ensure that all wells contain clean drinking water. This may mean that there are bodies to be removed from those wells, to guarantee the water remains usable. Mambru (Benicio Del Toro) is trying to get the dead, swollen body of an obese man out of a well with his car, but because his equipment is in bad shape he fails. He contacts his colleague B (Tim Robbins), who along with newcomer Sophie (Mélanie Thierry) come over to help. It is the beginning of a long day .. Continue reading

The Walk (2015) – Review

review The Walk

The Twin Towers will always be in our collective memory because of the events in 2001. The buildings were an iconic part of the skyline of New York and it is still weird to not see them when you’ve seen them in so many movies and TV shows in the past. Still they were also the place where in the seventies one man wanted to realise a dream. That man was Philippe Petit from France (played here by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and he wanted to his high wire act between the to buildings. Continue reading

Kung Fu Elliot (2014) – Review

Review Kung Fu Elliot

Netflix has quite a diverse offering of movies and TV shows and within the documentary category I found this title. The cover art looked beautiful and although it only had one star I still decided to see what this movie was about. I soon found out that Elliot ‘White Lightning’ Scott is someone with a dream: becoming the first Canadian action hero. Continue reading

Minions (2015) – Review

Review Minions

It’s funny to see how certain characters in entertainment become so popular that they are actually more popular than the main characters themselves. This was the case with the Rabbits in the Rayman games where the funny, but also very stupid bunnies eventually got their own games and TV show. In the Despicable Me movies the minions were responsible for comic relief and those were the moments that were often the most fun. A spinoff with just these funny yellow figures was bound to happen (just like a flood of merchandise from dolls to “fart guns”). However, are these characters entertaining enough to fill an entire movie? Continue reading

American Ultra (2015) – Review

Recensie American Ultra

You take a former CIA agent who can not remember his past (the Bourne films), let him work as a stoner in a small supermarket (Clerks), then send a number of people out to eliminate him (Terminator), which triggers the agent to know exactly what he must do to survive (The Equalizer). Add a little bit of romance to it and the result is American Ultra, with Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart in the lead roles. Continue reading
