xXx: Return of Xander Cage (2017) – Review

Review xXx: Return of Xander Cage

During his career Vin Diesel has played various characters, but he’s mainly an actor who has been successful as an action star in his Fast & Furious and Riddick movies and the extreme sports version of James Bond: xXx. The first movie in the franchise was bizarre but enjoyable and in the sequel his role was played by Ice Cube. As the title already implies Diesel is back (after 15 years). Does that result in a film worth watching? Hell yes. Continue reading

A Monster Calls (2016) – Review

review A Monster Calls

Before I start this review…yes, the tree in this movie looks a lot like Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy, which probably is coincidence and besides that he’s completely different…now back to my regularly scheduled program:
Kids dare to let their fantasy run wild. A simple stick can change into almost anything and each new space they enter is filled with potential for new stories. Their fantasy can also be used to deal with difficult situations where the things they make up might give them comfort. Continue reading

Black (2015) – Review

Review Black

When the Belgian movie Black had its cinema run I read a lot of positive things about it. It is set in Brussels and focusses on the criminal part of society, specifically local gangs and their rivalry. Because of the subject matter and the fact I had seen various American movies dealing with the subject I watched this with some expectations, but that the movie would be so extreme during a couple of points, shocked me. Continue reading

Hidden Figures (2016) – Review

Review Hidden Figures

Hidden Figures tells a story you don’t see in many films. Of course there are enough movies which are about people who are good at something and strive to be the best, but there aren’t many which tell a story about three African-American women who played a very important role in the NASA space program while the United States still had laws in place which treated them differently. Continue reading

I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore (2017) – Review

Review I Don't Feel at Home in this world anymore

You are familiar with them, those small, daily frustrations. A colleague or roommate who didn’t clean up, people in the supermarket who pretend they don’t see you when rushing to the register to get ahead of you or that other driver who was driving behind you when two lanes have to merge, but still tries to get in front of you once you have merged. Depending on your state of mind you either let it slide or let it get to you. For Ruth (Melanie Lynskey) those type of moments keep piling up. When she comes home and finds out that a burglary took place and the police states that there isn’t much they can do, she has had enough. Continue reading

Kong: Skull Island (2017) – Review

Recensie Kong Skull Island

To me the original 1933 King Kong remains the ultimate King Kong movie, one which was way ahead of its time. Despite its age and many other films which has depicted this prehistoric monster it is still great to watch. When watching monster movies you can only hope for characters to survive, because there realistically isn’t anything which can stop them. That’s also the case for the creatures in Kong: Skull Island (which you could call the real “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) Continue reading

Off the Rails (2016) – Review

Review Off the Rails

Darius McCollum is a man with a passion. Of course being passionate about something is beautiful. It means that there is something which moves you so strongly that you can lose yourself in it, love spending time on it and possibly even enhance your life. That is partly the case for Darius. His life is all about subways and public transport in New York. As a kid he spent a lot of time hanging around the stations and talking to employees. He helped them, rode along with them and after a while gained so much knowledge that one of the subwaydrivers let him control the subway train. It even went as far as him being allowed to ride one all by himself when he was 15. Unfortunately someone spotted him alone and he was arrested. It didn’t stop there though. He felt a strong urge to ride the trains. His applied for a job but was denied, so he found other ways to still do what he wanted. He decided to just take subway trains or busses from the yards and just follow their normal routes, picking up passengers. He’s been arrested for that 32 times and Darius is 50 now. He has spent half of his life behind bars because of his obsessive behaviour. Continue reading

The LEGO Batman Movie (2017) – Review

Recensie The Lego Batman movie

The first Lego movie was to many a very pleasant surprise. Its title song “Everything is awesome” dug a way into your skull and remained there for days. The movie itself was filled with humour, unexpected cameos and an original story. Based on that everyone was looking forward to a sequel, which has come into the form of The Lego Batman movie, in which the superhero (who also had a part in the previous Lego movie) is the center of attention. Although we haven’t had a shortage of movies starring Batman the last couple of years, not all of them were good (Batman v Superman anyone?). Do the Lego bricks manage to charm again? Continue reading

John Wick 2 (2017) – Review

Review John Wick 2

The original John Wick was an entertaining and surprising, action-filled revengefilm which introduced its viewers into the world of assassins and on of the most professional and notorious ones, played by Keanu Reeves. It was an unexpected hit and it was only a matter of time before a sequel would be released. Does director Chad Stahelski manage to deliver another great action film? Continue reading

Review Bodyguards Secret Lives from the Watchtower

There are different forms of being a celebrity. Of course there are the actors and musicians, where being famous automatically means more popularity (and money), but als politicians get a lot of attention, especially when you have a different point of view.
