Sons of Ben (2015)

Review Sons of Ben

We all have our dreams, some of which we feel we might never be able to realise. It could be a bigger house or a nice car, but it can also be something we want to see changed in our surroundings. Sons of Ben is a documentary which tells the story of a couple of men who had a dream which seemed impossible: To make sure there town had a soccer team which would play in the National League. There was only one problem, the town didn’t even have a team which could enter and they weren’t planning on playing themselves. Continue reading

Cop Car (2015)

Review Cop car

The most simple concepts often result in the best movies. Cop Car is a very good example of that: As the starting point for your story you take a cop car and then think of events that could happen having to do with that car. Writer and director Jon Watts (who will also direct the new Spiderman film) manages to impress with that idea. Continue reading

Happy Valley – Season 1

review Happy Valley

A title like Happy Valley immediately makes me have an association with a couple of things. I think of Bob Ross, with his “happy little trees” and the fantasy that comes with it, but it could also be the place where the minions live. However, the title is anything but that. Happy Valley is a hard and exciting thriller set in a valley where happiness and joy are hard to find. Continue reading

Amy (2015)

Review Amy

There are some artists which have this special sound you connect with the first time you hear them. It’s something I don’t have often, but I can still remember when I saw the video for Amy Winehouse’s “Stronger than Me”. Not only her voice was different, but so was the subject matter. When this came out it had been a while since I bought a CD, but for this one I immediately went to a record store to buy her album Frank.

She was an artist who I checked out a bit more than I did others and unfortunately you saw her taking some wrong steps in her life. Her death in 2011, even though shocking, never came as a surprise. Because of her popularity various documentaries have been made about this singer, but as this one has been made by director Asif Kapadia my expectations were high. Continue reading

The Last Starfighter (1984)

Review The Last Starfighter2015 small blindspot

During one of my blogathons I read on Rodney’s Fernby Films, that this movie had a lot of impact on him, which made me curious about it. For him growing up it was a movie (besides The Neverending Story) which gave him the idea he could be more than he was. It was the main reason for me to add this movie to my Blindspot series this year. Of course it also helped that this is a science fiction movie from the eighties, which also comes with a lot of nostalgia. Continue reading

Ant-Man (2015)

Antman review

Ant-man. It isn’t immediately a title which sounds like something worth watching and had this movie been made about two decades ago, chances would be that it would have been a pretty terrible film. The times have changed though and every year various superhero movies are released. The Marvel Studios managed to have a lot of success with the Avengers movies (and the standalone movies leading up to it). Last year their Guardians of the Galaxy, with a group of completely unknown heroes, was an unexpected success. And now there is a movie about a person who can become as small as an ant. Does Marvel succeed in bringing this concept convincingly to the big screen Continue reading

Slacker (1991)

Review Slacker

If you’ve been watching for a long time you will have specific expectations. If it’s a comedy of course you’ll expect jokes, but also weird characters or strange situations. If it’s a drama you expect to be pulled into someone’s life and their story as they deal with a difficult situations. It’s easy to come up with more examples. Most movies follow those expectations as they belong to the specific type of movie. Still there are sometimes movies which do things differently, which use a concept and stick to that. The result will not always work, but taking risks when making movies is something I’m able appreciate. Continue reading

Terminator Genisys (2015)

Review Terminator Genisys

Why do audiences keep visiting new Terminator movies? Since the second movie there really haven’t been any great films in this series, but still new installments are being made. I do keep having hope that the new one will be good, but I have been disappointed time after time. My feeling about this movie in advance wasn’t positive at all. But Arnold Schwarzenegger is back and even James Cameron had positive things to say about this new part. Two important reason for me to still head to the cinema to see how good/bad Terminator Genisys is. Continue reading

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (2013)

Review Tale of Princess Kaguya

When you think of Studio Ghibli the first thing you’ll probably also think of is Hayao Miyazaki, the director of movies like My Neighbour Totoro, Spirited Away, Princes Mononoke and Howl´s Moving Castle. But he started the studio together with Isao Takahata. Takahata was responsible for the heartbreaking Grave of the Fireflies. Does he manage to get out the same sort of emotions with The Tale of the Princess Kaguya? Continue reading
