How many good movies do you know where horses play the main part? If you forget Warhorse for a moment (a movie which I found quite manipulative and disappointing) you probably van only think of movies where a young girl has to save a horse. Enough reason for me to approach this movie carefully as I didn’t know if this was a tame horse or a wild stallion. Continue reading

An Honest Liar (2014)
The world is filled with miracles and impressive powers. At least that’s what a lot of people try to convince you of. James “The Amazing” Randi, who started his career as a magician (and did many Houdini tricks), decided to focus on proving that people who bend spoons, faith healers and others dealing with supernatural forces are all scamming people. He doesn’t believe in the paranormal and wants to tell this to everyone willing to listen. Continue reading
Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey (2014)
Scientist Carl Sagan was not someone who was a worldwide celebrity and therefore I had never heard of him. Reading up on him I understood her regularly visited the talkshows and presented various programmes which helped to make science more popular. One of those programs was Cosmos. I never saw the original version, but Neil deGrasse Tyson has breathed new life into the show. After seeing Interstellar I was inspired to check it out. Continue reading
Jupiter Ascending (2015)
The Wachowskis don’t seem to want to make “safe” movies. The want to think big, bring different concepts and spectacle to the screen. That sometimes leads to movies which are widely loved like The Matrix (where reality wasn’t what it seemed to be), but also movies which divide audiences, like Cloud Atlas (a story told across centuries).
With Jupiter Ascending they show that daring attitude again. By taking a story which would also work as a costume drama, spectacular action as you’d expect from them, costumes which wouldn’t look bad in a Tarsem Singh movie and a sauce of science fiction, they have created a movie which is meant to be seen on the big screen. Continue reading
Labyrinthus (2014)
When it comes to children’s tv and movies there is one company which pretty much dominates that market, which is the Belgian Studio 54 which has a wide range of successful franchises. You’d almost forget that other companies make movies as well, but Labyrinthus is a great example of one checking out. An exciting movie for the older kids. Continue reading
Almost Famous (2000)
So to start the year strong I thought it was a good idea to kick off the year with watching one of my “Blindspot” movies for 2015. I had never watched it and the only thing I read about it that it had to do with the rock scene. As that really isn’t my genre of music I never watched it. But as these things go I kept seeing it being reviewed positively by other bloggers and decided to add it to my “to watch” list and have now come around to seeing it.
Not knowing anything about it I was very surprised going in to see the amount of names of well-known actors who are in this movie: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Frances McDormand, Billy Crudup, Zooey Deschanel and Jason Lee to name just a few. And it turned out those names aren’t the only good thing about this film. Continue reading
Nightcrawler (2014)
It is fantastic how a movie can transport you. Behind the door of every cinema or after pressing play at home you can feel like you’ve stepped into a different world. A short escape from reality, providing a unique experience you normal won’t be able to feel.
Nightcrawler takes you into the world of the “nightcrawlers”, the men and women who, armed with a police scanner, are searching for accidents and crimes to film and photograph. The goal is to sell the material to either newspapers or news agencies. Continue reading
Papillon (1973)
2014 has been a year in which I haven’t watched as many older movies as I usually do. The cause for this is partly because there were so much new movies I wanted to see, but also because I hadn’t set myself a goal to work through specific movie lists, like the IMDB top 250 I did before. When doing it, it meant I got to discover a high number of movie classics. This was supposedly also one, which had been wanting to see, but never got around to (even though I’ve had the DVD for several years). So I finally decided to free up 151 minutes to watch it. Continue reading
Playtime (1967)
Les vacances de Monsieur Hulot was my first experience of watching Jacques Tati and his most famous character Monsieur Hulot. THat movie really didn’t have much story to it, but felt almost like a comedic documentaire about the events that take place in a hotel near a beach. The DVD set of his movies also had his fourth movie Playtime in it, which has been on my to watch list for years. I had gotten very curious about it and was interested to find out how it would compare to Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot. Continue reading
Coherence (2013)
I’ve always had a big preference for movies which make you think. To make it even more specific, movies which play with what reality is or in which things can’t be explained easily. Movies like Donnie Darko, Primer, Upstream Color or Under the Skin are great examples of that. It is also the reason why Mr.Nobody is still in my all time top 3 movies. Coherence is a movie which starts out normal, but quickly turns into a fascinating mystery. Continue reading
