When you think of gangster movies you’ll automatically start thinking about movies like The Godfather, Scarface and Goodfellas. They are all movies made quite a while ago. Although Hollywood still produces them they have become a rare breed. The genre is still very alive in South Korea and it has produced some interesting ones that are worth checking out (A Dirty Carnival and A Bittersweet Life come to mind). Nameless Gangster is the type of gangster movie I love where it’s not really about violence (although that is present), but about the relationships between characters. Continue reading

Indie Game: The Movie (2011)
Besides being a movie lover I have been a gamer as long as I can remember. My dad loved gaming as much as I did and he really spoilt me. The first game we had was a dedicated Pong machine (which I still own), but through the years we also had an Atari 2600, MSX, MSX2, Amiga, Gameboy, Mega Drive and once I lived on my own my gaming habits remained, having owned allmost all the new consoles that came out (Playstation 1 and 2, Dreamcast, Xbox 1 and 360 and the Wii). Unfortunately I don’t have the amount of time anymore to play as much as I used to, but I still occasionally enjoy my games and also try to spend time gaming with the kids. When I heard about this documentary last year I was really looking forward to seeing it as there aren’t many documentaries out on the subject. Continue reading
Roman Holiday (1953)
A while ago Ruth from Flixchatter celebrated the birth of (one of) her favorite actors that has graced the screen, Gregory Peck. She advised me to watch Roman Holiday, which is one of her favorites (you can read here why she loves it so much). So I bought the DVD and, as it goes when you have so many movies you want to watch, it took a while for me to get around to seeing it. So what are my thoughts on this modern fairytale? Continue reading
Bicycle Thieves (1948)
Continuing my journey through the IMDB top 250 (I have to try and reach the goal I’ve set of having seen 225 of them by the end of the year), Bicycle Thieves is the next one on the list I’ve seen. It’s a movie I had never heard of before. The title is very descriptive, so I was wondering what kind of story this movie would tell. Continue reading
The Avengers (2012)
One of the biggest movies out this year and I might be a bit late to finally review it. I watched it a some weeks ago, just didn’t get around to writing down my thoughts on it. So what did I think of The Avengers? Continue reading
Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011)
History has thought us that the human mind is easily manipulated. You can see it in how a dictator slowly rises by influencing the ones close around him and eventually a whole nation. It also happens on a smaller scale, for example as the documentary Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple (2006) has shown. Martha Marcy May Marlene looks at how one person might slowly get into a cult and what it’s like to make the step to leave it and deal with the aftermath. Continue reading
Love Jones (1997)
When it comes to romantic movies most of them seem to be filled with stereotypes. The characters are card box cutouts and it’s mostly about them ending up in crazy situations. So it’s always refreshing to see a movie where the characters feel like real people. There are a couple of movies where I have that feeling like Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Once. This is another movie that managed to portray people the way they are. Is it as good as those other movies though? Continue reading
Last Train Home (2009)
Just imagine 130 million people having to move from one place to another. In only a couple of weeks. That’s the entire population of France and Great Britain having to move somewhere. It seems that it would be something that is impossible, but it’s something that happens every year in China. All the people working for the big factories go back to their families to celebrate Chinese New Year. This documentary looks at one of the families that are part of this big migration. Continue reading
Tell No One (2006)
France sure know how to make a good thriller. After recently seeing Point Blank I read about this movie on someone else’s blog (sorry I can’t remember who it was, but I follow so many). Since it also starred François Cluzet, who I really loved in The Intouchables (which you really should see immediately if you can) I had to check it out. So is it any good? Continue reading
Comic-Con Episode Four: A Fan’s Hope (2011)
If you are into comics, video games or movies (since you are reading this chances are pretty good it’s at least one out of three) you have probably heard of the Comic-Con. It’s the yearly convention in which fans of any of these come together to get the latest info, buy new things or dress up as their favorite characters. You could say it is a convention of geeks, but the forms of entertainment that rule the world now are widely consumed and it’s normal to be a big fan of something. This new documentary by Morgan Spurlock looks into the convention and the people who visit it. Continue reading
