Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) – Review

review Star Wars The Last Jedi
When Star Wars: The Force Awakens was announced, the fans were tense. The second trilogy (Episode I to III) disappointed many and people wondered if it was necessary to make new films. Was it possible to make movies which reached the same level as the original films? J.J.Abrams also must have felt that pressure, as he decided not to take too much risk by using many elements of A New Hope and fan favorites like Han Solo/Leia plus introducing new characters like Rey, Finn and Poe.

It was this mix that ensured that fans embraced the film and were curious about answers to the questions that The Force Awakens asked. Who are Rey’s parents, what is the story behind Kylo Ren and what can Luke do to help the rebels? These are all questions that The Last Jedi tries to answer. Continue reading

American Made (2017) – Review

Recensie American Made

Thanks to Netflix and its drug series, Narcos, stories about the South American drugtrade have become popular. The history of Pablo Escobar and related documentaries were a great success for the service. So it is a good moment to use this popularity is what the people behing American Made probably thought, in which Tom Cruise plays the leading role. Continue reading

The Confession Tapes – Season 1 – Review

Recensie The Confession Tapes seizoen 1

Can you imagine that somewhere an accident occurs or a murder is committed and you know that you weren’t present, but you were arrested for it, subsequently interrogated and finally, on camera/tape, you’d confess that you were the perpetrator? My feeling is that you will answer this with a convincing no. Why would you say to have committed a crime when this is not the case? After seeing The Confession Tapes you will start to doubt whether you would react differently. Continue reading

Blade Runner 2049 (2017) – Review

Review Blade Runner 2049

The influence of 1982’s Blade Runner on the look of science fiction films has been enormous. In addition, it is a film that is widely praised by film lovers who can have a lot of discussion about what is the best version to watch and whether the character played by Harrison Ford, Deckard, is a replica or not. It is a classic and the announcement of a sequel was received with mixed reactions. Understandable, since too many sequels have been made that did not meet expectations. Yet there was a lot of hope that this might be a movie that would be worthwhile. The reason? The film would be directed by Denis Villeneuve who really hasn’t made bad films (Arrival, Sicario, Prisoners, Enemy and Incendies). In addition he would work together with cinematographer Roger Deakins and maybe that cooperation could lead to something that reached the same level of the original. Is that the case? Continue reading

Spielberg (2017) – Review

Review Spielberg
There are some directors who will always be named when discussing the best. Steven Spielberg is of course one of them. A director who has built up an impressive oeuvre. He was responsible for the first blockbuster in the form of Jaws, made classics such as E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the Indiana Jones films, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler’s List and many more. The documentary Spielberg looks back at his career together with him and the people he worked with. Continue reading

Manifesto (2015) – Review

reviewManifesto

“All art is fake” is one of the first texts your read while watching Manifesto. Of course, this applies entirely to film, in which people pretend to be in certain situations. Nonetheless, there is an unwritten contract with the viewer in which he deliberately lets himself be deceived during the running time and plays along in pretending it is reality. Art can be something different for everyone. One person absolutely hates it, others can lose themselves in it and for those who make it, the meaning and goals are different. For decades artists try to stand out, rebel against the established order, bring something new for which they sometimes write a manifesto. Artist / director Julian Rosefeld worked with Cate Blanchett to to bring the words of various manifestos to life in various contemporary settings. Texts by, among others, Karl Marx, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, Jim Jarmusch, Werner Herzog and Lars von Trier. Continue reading

Good Time (2017) – Review

Recensie Good Time

Although Robert Pattinson became known to the general public as Edward Cullan in the Twilight Saga films, he also played very different roles in films such as Cosmopolis, Life and The Lost City of Z. In Good Time he collaborates with the Safdie brothers, who have been making low budget films in New York for ten years. This film meant a major breakthrough for them, but Pattinson also is amazing here. Since I read as little as possible about a movie beforehand, it took about fifteen minutes before I recognized him. Continue reading

Kidnap (2017) – Review

Recensie Kidnap
Halle Berry seems to have emerged as an action star during recent years (just like Liam Neeson for example, who has since indicated that he does not want to make actionfilms anymore because he’ss already 65). In The Call she was a 911
telephone operator who tried to rescue a kidnapped teenager. In Kidnap she plays a mother who wants to get her kidnapped 6-year-old son back. Continue reading

Barefoot in the Park (1967) – Review

Recensie Barefoot in the Park

One of the apps I use on almost a day to day basis is Just Watch. It shows which movies have been added to Netflix (and other services) each day. It keeps me up to date and makes me aware of titles I wouldn’t normally notice. Recently this movie was in the list and I had never heard of it, even though it has an Oscar nomination for best female supporting role. With Jane Fonda and Robert Redford in the leading roles, I was interested in seeing it. Continue reading
