The world of spies is always an interesting subject for movies. It has spawned big franchises like the Bond, Bourne and Mission Impossible series, but every year also sees a sprinkling of other spy related movies, movies like Salt, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Spy Game, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Haywire immediately come to mind. Safe House is also set in the world from spies, but the setup is slightly different. Continue reading

Prometheus (2012)
When it comes to science fiction movies I’ve got the feeling that there are way too little good ones out each year, so when I heard that Ridley Scott, who’s known for great movies like Bladerunner and Alien would be releasing a new sci fi movie I couldn’t wait to see it. I managed to dodge all news and trailers about the movie, so I went in blank and without expectations. Did Prometheus manage to quench my thirst for good sci fi?

Burden of Dreams (1982)
Werner Herzog had a dream to make the movie I reviewed yesterday, Fitzcarraldo. It’s about a man who wants to make his dream of building an opera house in the middle of the jungle a reality. Part of doing so is to pull a ship over a mountain in the Amazon. As Herzog found out, some dreams can slowly turn into nightmares. Les Blank documented it. Continue reading
Tyrannosaur (2011)
Brutal, vicious and terrifying are the first things I think of when I think of a Tyrannosaur. This isn’t a movie set in prehistoric times and it doesn’t have any ties to Jurassic Park. Those initial feelings do come pretty close in describing this movie though. Continue reading
A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies (1995)
Since I started the “Story Behind” series I’ve wanted to know more about the history of film. As you know watch older movies regularly, but haven’t really looked into specific time periods or genres. In this documentary Martin Scorcese takes the viewer on a journey showing his love for film. Should you join him on a 225 minute journey? Continue reading
The Adventures of Tintin (2011)
Finally out on DVD as I missed it when it was at the cinema this is a movie I was looking forward to. I didn’t read much of the comics when I was young, so I have no idea how much it adheres to the original story, but the fact that Spielberg is involved was enough reason for me to see it. Continue reading
Headhunters (2011)
The art world is an interesting one where people are willing to pay big money just because it is widely loved. If there is demand there are always willing to help in supplying what they want and Roger Brown (Aksel Hennie) is the man for the job. While he has a day job as a headhunters trying to find the right person for a CEO position he also steals paintings in order to be able to make sure he keeps his wife happy and is able to pay for his expensive villa. It is not a job without risks and when one of them doesn’t go as planned Roger doesn’t seem to be safe anymore. Continue reading
Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple (2006)
On November 18 1978 a total of 909 people committed mass suicide (or were mass murdered depending how you look at it) in Jonestown in Guyana. Their leader Jim Jones was the founder of the Peoples’ Temple. This documentary looks into its creation and the history of its founder and which events lead to this horrible event. Continue reading
Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring (2003)
Who would have thought that a movie about a monk living on a floating temple could be this mesmorising? This is the first movie I’ve seen directed by Korean director Ki-duk Kim, but I’d be interested to see more of his work. Continue reading
The Artist (2011)
What was the last time you saw a silent movie? The answer will probably that most people won’t have seen one in a while, either because they feel like it’s not worth checking out or simply “because it’s in black and white” or “has no sound”. I never understood those reasons as I regularly check out older movies (Jeanne D’Arc being a memorable one for example) which are watching just as much as newer ones. Will the Oscar buzz surrounding The Artist change people’s mind about not watching something like this? I hope it does as this was one I really enjoyed. Continue reading
