With Thor: Ragnarok Taika Waititi has shown to a big audience the brand of humor he’s into. Movie lovers though already knew what he was capable of with movies like Boy, The Hunt for the Wilderpeople and What We Do in the Shadows. That last one, in which a “documentary crew” follows a group of vampires who are living together was both bizarre and hilarious. In that mockumentary there was a part where two police officers who weren’t the brightest ones, Officer Minogue (Mike Minogue) and Officer O’Leary (Karen O’Leary), visit the house to investigate. With Wellington Paranormal these two characters have their own spinoff show. Continue reading

Atlanta – Season 1 – Review
Most will know Donald Glover as an actor, but he is also an artist (Childish Gambino), director, writer, comedian and producer. He appeared in Community, The Martian, Spider-Man: Homecoming and for the Han Solo film he will play Lando Calrissian. So it is someone who has a busy life and also finds the time to make his own series in the form of Atlanta. A series that wanted to see for a while, but did not get around to. Luckily I had a long flight a while ago where the show was on the entertainment system and I could finally watch it. Continue reading
American Crime Story: Seizoen 1 – Review
When I first about this series I started wondering if it wasn’t a bit too soon to make a show about the O.J. Simpson case. I can still remember this being in the news and how the court case got lots of attention in the media. Then I realised that these events took place more than twenty years ago. So there is a whole generation who doesn’t know this case, in which a beloved former American football-player and actor suddenly became a suspect in the murder of his ex-wife and her boyfriend. The chase in his white Bronco was broadcast live. I didn’t know all the details of the case, but I never really watched it at the time. So this first season of American Crime Story was a nice opportunity to watch what happened and why this court case caused so much discussion. Continue reading
Broadchurch – Season 1 – Review
Even though TV offers a lot of new shows, I’ve been watching quite a few older shows on Netflix lately. It is nice not having to wait a week before finding out what will happen during the next episode. The fact that I recent years I watched more movies than TV means I’ve missed a lot of good shows, including Broadchurch. It was recommended to me by several people and since season only consists of eight episodes (short series have in fact my preference) it was a good show to start with and finish in only a couple of days. Continue reading
Empire – Season 1 – Review
Sometimes you hear about these very popular shows and if you hear about them just enough, you might be interested in checking it out just to see what all the fuss is sabout. Just before the second season of Scandal started I decided to check out the first season. Continue reading
Happy Valley – Season 1
A title like Happy Valley immediately makes me have an association with a couple of things. I think of Bob Ross, with his “happy little trees” and the fantasy that comes with it, but it could also be the place where the minions live. However, the title is anything but that. Happy Valley is a hard and exciting thriller set in a valley where happiness and joy are hard to find. Continue reading
The Passenger (Le Passager) (2014) – Season 1
True Detective has shown that a police drama in which a ritual murder has taken place and which has to be solved by looking into the past can be extremely good. The French Le Passager also takes that idea, but does it manage to reach the same heights as the American show? Continue reading
The Code: Season 1
There were a couple of years where I just stopped watching TV shows. The main reason for this was the fact that they take up so much time when compared to movies, but last year I decided to dip my feet into the world of television again and have loved shows like Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, Black Mirror, The Bridge (original version) and many more. Recently I watched this Australian show, which because of its length, just six episodes, was nice and short. Lees verder
Gomorra – Season 1
Organised crime has always been an interesting subject for both movies and television shows. People are always fascinated by people who live their lives outside the rules. Even though they are always in danger they wield power and wealth allowing them to live a life of luxury. The Godfather movies and a tv show like The Sopranos are extremely popular not because they are all about a violent existence, but mainly because they also show the personal relationship between people and show the effects the environment they are living in can have on them. It is what the 12 episode first season of the Italian mafia series Gomorra also attempts to show. Continue reading
Black Mirror – Season 1: Fifteen Million Merits
Whereas the first episode of Black Mirror was set fully in a world known to the viewer, this second episode takes a journey into the future. A world in which society is completely different and people no longer live in houses, but within a small rooms with a bed in a huge building. There’s nothing else in the room except that all four walls are TVs. There are no windows and no one goes outside. The only thing people are doing is cycling on hometrainers to earn virtual money and watch television. Continue reading
