At the end of my Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom I wrote that “the idea of the end might be interesting, but I hope that the writers of the (probably inevitable) sequel come up with better ideas”. Zion (2018) – Review
When an specific event takes place that was witnessed by many people, you could ask all of them to tell them what happened and you will get different stories. Some will not only tell you the facts, but others might add extra layers explaining their feelings, the atmosphere and small details that make it come alive. Although documentaries are about real events, it is the way you tell them that can make or break a documentary. Just like any other movie it needs to be edited in the right way in order to make the viewer care about what you are seeing. A director like Werner Herzog is almost poetic in his voicovers for his documentaries and that really adds a lot. Zion, this short documentary now available on Netflix, unfortunately lacks a proper story. Continue reading
Pombo Loves You (2015) – Short movie review
Steve Warne has worked as an animator on movies like Frankenweenie, Ma Vie de Courgette and Kubo and the Two Strings. But he also wrote, directed and animated this short film in 2015, Pombo Loves You. It’s about a father who shares custody and takes care of his daughter part of the time. When she’s at his place she find a Pombo mask, which brings back vivid and traumatic memories for the father. Continue reading
Firebase (2017) – Short film review
Fans of director Neil Blomkamp have been in for a treat this year. With his new Oats Studio he has released various shorts this year (most around the 20-minute mark), which visually are on the same level as the big blockbusters. The first one was Rakka and the second he released was this one, Firebase. A story which is set in 1970, during the Vietnam war. The army has to face something supernatural. Continue reading
Rakka (2017) – Short film review
In 2009 director Neill Blomkamp managed to impress the world with his District 9. With an estimated budget of “only” 30 million he managed to make a science fiction film with lots of special effects, which got Hollywood interested. The next two movies he made, Elysium and Chappie (both of which I enjoyed) generally weren’t received as positvely. A while ago Blomkamp announced he would be starting Oats Studios, with which he’ll make short experimental films. The first one is the alien invasion short Rakka, which is available through YouTube. It’s No Game – Short film
Last year I wrote about Sunspring, a short film which was written entirely by an articifial intellgence which called itself Benjamin. When watching that it quickly became clear that there still was long way to go, but despite that it was fascinating to watch. This year Benjamin has written something again, but the approach of it has been different. This time various parts are written by humans and it quickly becomes clear when Benjamin’s work kick in as it shows a different style. Does that result in a good film? You be the judge! Borrowed Time (2015) – Short movie review
We all know that animation isn’t only used to make movies for children (just look at Grave of the Fireflies). Directors Lou Hamou-Lhadj and Andrew Coats, who both work at Pixar, decided to make an animated short in their spare time. It would take them five years before they’d finish it and it has payed off, as the short is in the race for an Oscar. Enough reason to give this short a look. Continue reading
Stealing Time (2011) – Short movie review
The creativity of the human mind know no limits and it’s always fascinating to see what is being invented, but also which theories we think of about things we can’t even see. It appeals to the imagination and the best movies normally also manage to do that. Whether it was the first Matrix movie which did that on a technical level or Black Swan which did that emotionally. A favorite subject of mine has always been time travel as it enables you to dream about both the future and the past, so it’s no surprise I keep searching for new movies I have not seen. The Distance Between (2012) – Short film review
Although I’m not the biggest fan of romantic comedies, I do love romantic movies. I’ll admit that the two can overlap and do that successfully, like (500) Days of Summer, but I’d rather watch a movie like Before Sunrise than 27 Dresses. The feeling these two titles provoke is very different and I simply love the naturalistic feeling of the first one better. When I found this short film, directed by Emily Ting, I was interested to see what type of romantic movie this was. Continue reading
