The Monday Question: Improve!

Another Monday, another question. This time it’s not really about the movies, but the way we as bloggers talk about it on our blogs. I’ve been doing this for over two years and still enjoy it a lot. I love seeing new comments and discovering new blogs. When it comes to my own blog I’m always looking for ways to improve it and I’m never completely statisfied, always trying to think of new content and other things I could make better.

This week’s question:
If you had all the time in the world, what would you change to your blog to improve it? Continue reading

The Monday Question: Off-screen antics!

Hope you all had a great weekend. Mine was a nice and relaxed one, being able to watch two movies I had been curious about. These were Ted (which was a tad disappointing), Ruby Sparks (loved it) and Brave (which managed to win me over after I initally wondered if Pixar still had it). I also had the time to prepare a new series I’ve had in my head for a while, which you’ll be able to experience tomorrow.

Of course it wouldn’t be a proper Monday if I didn’t have a question for you to answer, which is about what actors and actresses do when they are not on screen. Back in the days the studios were able to create the way the public would perceive them, but those days are long gone and when an actor or actress makes a mistake or does something shocking you will be able to read about it in a matter of hours. Whether it is news about Tom Cruise jumping on a couch or struggling with a divorce, Mel Gibson or Christian Bale being verbally abusive or another actor/actress being caught behind the wheel with too much alcohol, chances are big you will hear about it whether you’d want to know or not.

My question:
Do the antics of actors/actresses off-screen affect your viewing behaviour when it comes to their movies? Continue reading

The Monday Question: Darkness!

When we visit the cinema we look forward to the experience, sitting in a big room with lots of people experiencing the light of images bigger than life hitting our eyes and together sharing and (hopefully) enjoying the experience with others. When the lights go out you know that you are going to see something you were curious about, looking forward to. Going to the cinema is a special experience. But what if you watch a movie at home? You will agree the experience is very different and it made me wonder about something:

When you watch a movie at home do you turn off the lights? Continue reading

The Monday Question: Rob!

It’s Monday again, which means it is that time of the week where I’ll ask you to answer a question. I would like you all to use your imagination this times. You have just received an important assignment, which is to get your hand on a big sum of money. In order to do so you will have to rob a bank. This week’s question:

If you were to rob a bank, which movie characters would you pick to be in your crew? Continue reading

The Monday Question: Misleading!

One of the most effective ways to get people interested in seeing a specific movie is the trailer. It’s the commercial in which you show the most exciting/funny or scary parts in the hopes people will pay money to see your movie. It’s a commercial and the marketing will show you whatever which will get you in the cinema seats. This results in something which will mislead or even spoil a movie. For me it’s a reason to not watch any trailers anymore, but once in a while I check them out after I’ve seen a movie out of curiosity. This week’s question:

Which trailers do you think were misleading? Continue reading

The Monday Question: All of them!

The weekend is over and what a weekend it has been. Yesterday I visited the PAC festival, which previews 5 movies which will be out in the coming months over here. Movies that were played were Jagten, Amour, Perks of Being a Wallflower, Lawless and a mystery movie, which turned out to be Trouble with the Curve. When you spend the whole day at the cinema (only going out for food between movies) you got a lot of time to think about movies and I started wondering about seeing all movies of specific actors or directors:

Are there any directors or actors of whom you have seen each and every movie? Continue reading

The Monday Question: Availability!

As a movie lover it is often frustrating to see that a lot of movies don’t get released at the same time all over the world. So it might happen that glowing reviews of something like Looper are filling my inbox with me having no possibility to see it yet (it will be released here at the end of November). Lately it also seems to be happening the other way around. Avengers for example came out in Europe first with America following two weeks later. It’s a frustrating practice which I wished wouldn’t exist, but these are the issues with several distribution companies.

In an ideal situation I would like to see movies released on all formats at the same time. Of course this probably wouldn’t be happening anytime soon because the big cinema chains would surely let the movie companies know about it, but why should people be forced to go to the cinema to see a movie? With three kids in the house I just simply don’t have the time to go there as much as I’d like. In a perfect world I’d like to see movies come out on all formats at the same time so I could just fire up my VOD service and watch that movie I’d really want to see immediately without leaving my house.

I’m interested in your thoughts on this:
Should movies be available on all formats at the same time? Continue reading

The Monday Question: Film/Digital!

The weekend is behind us again (unfortunately), so it’s time to fire up those braincells again with a question. Last week I finally managed to see a documentary I had been looking forward to for quite a while, Side by Side. For those that don’t know this documentary, it’s about the differences between shooting movies on film and digital. Many well-known directors and cinematographers have their say about it and it’s clear both formats have their strong and weak points. After watching this and seeing many examples of movies shot on film and digitally I did ask myself a question, which I would also like to ask you:

Do you see the difference between film and digital and do you prefer on of them? Continue reading

The Monday Question: Score!

Giving a score to a movie can be a difficult task, how do you decide what kind of “grade” you will give it and how much does it really mean? If you are reviewing movies as a blogger this is probably something you might wonder about as well from time to time and I’m interested on your views on it. This week’s question is:

How do your rate movies and what does a rating you give mean? Continue reading

The Monday Question: Art/entertainment!

I recently was listening to the Operation Kino podcast as they were discussing the Sight & Sound’s Greatest 50 Films Ever Made. They very shortly touched upon greatest movies and favorite movies and that there is a difference between the two. It kind of came down to the fact that the greatest movies are usually considered art. It made me think about what movies mean to me and why I watch them. I can certainly enjoy something which is beautifully shot, but I wondered:

If you had to choose between labelling movies as art or entertainment, which one would you choose? Continue reading
