The Monday Question: Cinema charm!

Last week I went to one of my favorite cinemas in Rotterdam, Cinerama, to see Martha Marcy May Marlene (great movie btw). It’s the only “older” cinema in town as all the other ones have closed down (which of course you can read more about in my weekly “The Lost Cinemas of Rotterdam” series. Which got me thinking why I like this cinema so much and thought it was a good Monday question:

What’s your favorite cinema in your town and why do you love it so much? Continue reading

The Monday Question: Question!

I have had a very busy weekend (I was best man at a friend’s wedding) and didn’t have any time to prepare my posts of this week, so I thought to turn the roles this week. It’s up to you to ask me questions!

So please ask me a question in the comments and will try to answer it (if I want to of course).

The Monday Question: Credits!

With the start of a fresh week it’s time for a new Monday question. Hope you all had fun during the weekend and managed to catch some great movies. I went to see The Avengers yesterday (I’ll let you know my thoughts in the review) and read this week that in America the movie would have an extra scene after the credits. It made me wonder about the credits themselves:
Do you sit through the end credits? Continue reading

The Monday Question: Introduce!

Today is “Koninginnedag” in the Netherlands (where everyone is celebrating the queen’s birtday), which means a day off work. For a lot of people it also means selling things they want to get rid off on the streets (one day in the year this is allowed), dressing up in orange clothes and of course drinking a lot. I don’t do any of those as I can’t stand the enormous crowds, but I will have a very relaxing day.

Despite the festivities I didn’t want to disappoint you, so this week the Monday question is actually me asking a bit of advice from you. When I was growing up there were classic movies which I absolutely love and as two of the kids are getting old enough (there are starting their teens) to start watching “normal” films instead of all the Disney and children’s fare I recently introduced them to some older movies. Time to educate them a bit I thought!
Today’s question is: Which classic movies should kids growing up be introduced to? Continue reading

The Monday Question: Sequel!

Every year lots of movies are made and a big part of them are sequels. You might think that it’s a lazy way to just earn some extra cash, but I personally don’t think it is. It takes time to write a new script and all the people involved are (at least I hope there are) all trying to get a good movie out there. Nobody makes bad movies on purpose. Plus there are enough examples where sequels can be as good as the original movies (or even better). Just look at Star Wars, Toy Story, Indiana Jones (ok, maybe not the last one), Back to the Future, Lord of the Rings, Terminator 2, The Godfather 2 and Aliens.

So let’s say you are running a studio and you could create a sequel (or prequel) to any movie you choose. Which movie would you pick and why? Continue reading

The Monday Question: Tracking!

If you’ve been reading My Filmviews for a while you are aware that I keep a close track of my movie watching. Of course my opinions are written down here, but there are tons of movies I never write about. I enjoy rating them and seeing how many I’ve seen in a year. I’m probably not the only person that does that though, so this week’s question is:

Do you track which movies you’ve seen, how do you do it and why? Continue reading

The Monday Question: Country!

If you like watching movies, chances are that out of all the movies you watch, most of them will be American. The impact of Hollywood has been big, which means that most cinemas will show American movies. The amount of movies that are shown from other countries is relatively small. You’d almost be inclined to think that hardly any other movies are made outside of America, even though you know that is not the case. As I was watching the excellent A Separation last week I started wondering about this.

If I look at my own viewing habits I try to watch movies from other countries too. I’ve developed a fond taste of Korean cinema, which produces very different films, whether its dark gangster movies or quirky comedies, they are unique and unpredictable which I enjoy a lot. I’ve seen movies from Japan (besides the Ghibli films), Argentina, France, Spain and Germany and a lot of other countries, but never as many as the American ones. You might wonder how many Dutch movies I watch (living in the country after all) and I’ll have to admit I’m not the biggest fan of them. My country has produced some excellent ones, but I’m not someone who will go to the cinema to see the latest one. They somehow don’t feel appealing enough to me. It’s hard to put that feeling into words.

This week’s question is: Do you venture outside of American cinema and if so, what are some of your favorite movies? Continue reading

The Monday Question: Direct!

The weekend has passed again, so it’s that time of the week that I’m asking you all a question again. I really enjoyed the weekend (even had time to finally do a slight update on the look of the site, which I wanted to do for ages) and of course watched some movies (rewatched Back to the Future 1 and 2, A Separation and The Fall) and while I started watching a documentary about documentaries I started wondering something. This week’s question is:
If you had to direct a movie, which genre would you choose? Continue reading

The Monday Question: Time!

This weekend the clock moved ahead an hour over here, so the weekend was a bit shorter as normal. This got me thinking about time. No, no questions about time travel movies (most will agree that Back to the Future is the favorite one), but I do have a question about time:
On average, how much time do you spend on movies each week (watching/talking/blogging)?

The Monday Question: Predict!

Happy Monday everyone, hope you had a great weekend. Mine was alright, with some movie watching (Rush Hour, Festen and two Werner Herzog documentaries: Into The Abyss and Death for Five Voices). I was thinking about what makes a movie stand out to me and came to the conclusion that if a movie is unpredictable and steers away from clichés that I tend to give it a higher score. I like when a movie manages to surprise. With years of movie watching under my belt you get this extra sense of predicting what will happen next. I recently saw The Grey and knowing that Liam Neeson is the only well-known actor it wasn’t difficult to guess what would eventually happen. This week’s Monday Question is about that:
While you are watching a movie are you trying to predict what is going to happen next and do you share your prediction? Continue reading
