It has been nearly impossible to stay away from the fact that a new Star Wars movie would be coming out this year. All the fans have been analyzing the trailers, toys and whatever else to get to know more about The Force Awakens and I’ve been truly tested to stay away from it all. Like with any other movie I want to see a new film with as little knowledge about it as possible. I’ve done a pretty good job as this movie literally has been news on every site I visit. Never experienced that for any other movie. The movie itself will be out over here on Wednesday and I initially wasn’t in any rush to see it (I’m not the biggest Star Wars fan, so I was patient to see it after the masses). That was until I got a press invitation to go to the first screening on Wednesday morning in a Dolby Cinema. Of course I couldn’t decline that, so have taken some time off from work to be able to attend it. Of course I’ll try to have my review up that day as well (but I’m sure I’ll not be the only one).
Will you go see the new Star Wars movie this week?
As the uptake and availability of streaming services like Netflix, Amazon and various others increases, more and more people are now watching all their media through them. With such a huge catalogue of titles available and the fact that most people don’t watch that many movies they don’t feel like it’s necessary to go to a shop (or an online store) just to buy a movie. For a price that’s less than one DVD or Bluray you have hundreds or thousands of movies and TV shows at your fingertips. I too find this convenience wonderful and whereas I used to buy movies on a weekly basis I now do so much less frequently. The last physical purchase I’ve made this year was a boxset of Werner Herzog films, but other things I have bought were usually VOD titles.
This week’s question:
Do you still buy physical movies?
As I saw The Martian last week I started thinking about space travel in various movies and started wondering about creating your own crew. The mission? You’ll be exploring a new planet and you will have no idea what you will face. It might be uninhabited, but alien lifeforms could also be present. This week’s question:
Who would you pick for your crew? Continue reading
A great joy of watching movies is that sense of discovery. Knowing that there is so much out there you haven’t seen and the thrill of finding one which ultimately touches you unlike any other movie has done. I love that first experience you have if it is a movie you have a deep connection with, of the unknown and it’s a shame that you know that the second time you’ll see it that feeling would be slightly different. It made me think:
Which movie(s) would you like to experience for the first time again?
Of course you could go for movies which have big reveals, something like Oldboy. But if I was forced to only pick two or three I’d probably go for my top 3 movies, Black Swan, Pulp Fiction and Mr.Nobody as I’m sure that they would have the same impact on me and would end up in the same spots. It would be thrilling to not know what would happen. Interested to know which movies you’d pick!
It’s been a while since I’ve posted a question and as you might have noticed my posting schedule hasn’t been as regular as it used to be. Partly that’s because I’ve been focussing a lot of my attention on the Dutch version of this site this past year, but there is also another reason: statistics. Yes, I do appreciate everyone who visits my blog, but since the beginning of the year I’ve seen quite a drop in numbers. I still don’t know the reason for this, but compared to last year the numbers were around half of what they were before. It might be that Google has changed some of its algorithms, meaning specific articles aren’t found as easily anymore or maybe because some popular articles have been less relevant, but still it has been something that’s been bothering me a bit. So that made me wonder:
How important are the statistics of your blog to you and have you noticed any changes the last year?
I just realised that we are already almost halfway of the year and thought it was a good moment to get an idea of the general feeling about this year. Looking at the number of movies I’ve seen and written down as potential candidates for my end of year list I think 2015 is turning out to be a pretty good year. There were other years where I wasn’t able to fill a top 10 list, but now I’m already there and there are still a lot of (potential) awesome movies to be released during the second half of the year. Personal favorites of mine include Mad Max: Fury Road, Kung Fury, Inside Out, Ex Machina, Chappie and Furious 7.
What do you think of the first half of our movie year?
Something which has become a big phenomenon, thanks to services like Netflix, is binge watching. A complete season of a show is released in its entirety and the viewer just keeps watching episode after episode, usually finishing it within a weekend. After reading a lot of good things about Daredevil last week over at Flixchatter and Fernby Films I had to give this one a chance. I started watching on Tuesday and I think I’ve only got about three episodes left. So I indulged quite a bit, but for good reason as the show is awesome. I’ll review it once I have finished it.
With the whole binge watching phenomenon I started thinking about watching these shows with a bigger audience. As a lot of these shows usually consist of about 13 episodes, you would be able to go to the cinema in the morning and binge watch it in the cinema, sharing that experience, allowing to talk about it with other like minded people. It’s an idea I quite like.
Would you like to be able to binge watch a TV show in a cinema?
It’s been a while since I’ve done a Monday question, but have had a lot of other non-blog related things to do. As a movie lover you watch a lot of movies and preferably in the cinema. If that’s not an option though and you are at home, in what way do you watch your movies? That’s the thing I want to know this week.
I myself have been using my 42 inch Panasonic plasma TV (together with a surround set) for some years now and have been dreaming about creating a separate cinema for years now. As that currently doesn’t seem to be possible I’ve decided to do the next best thing: Add components to the living room in order to make it more cinema like. So I headed over to the Wirecutter (great site to see what the best product is in a specific category) and decided I will add a beamer to my setup. After finding the European equivalent of their recommendation I went ahead and ordered it and it should be arriving today. I have not bought a proper screen yet as I first want to find out which size is perfect for my room and using the beamer I can get a feel as to which size I find most comfortable.
Have you ever considered buying a beamer to enjoy your movies even more?
Things have been a bit more quiet lately over at My Filmviews (except for my Five Senses blogathon of course), but have had a change of pace in my day to day life, meaning I have had less time to write for the site. Doesn’t mean I’m planning on slowing down, but other things have been a bit more important lately. But it is time to get “back to the regular schedule”!
This weekend I was thinking about the many genres movies offer and we all have our favourites. This week’s question is an interesting one though related to that:
If you could play in a movie, in which genre would you like to act? Continue reading
