The Monday Question: Speed!

The Monday Question

There are moments that you start wondering about the strangest things and this week’s question is an example of that. As I’m a big fan of movies I watch a lot of them and often try out movies which I might not enjoy. But unless a movie is really horrible I always feel that I should finish a movie and not turn it off. In the days of the VHS tapes this would sometimes mean fast forwarding through bits, but now more options are available, one of them being able to play back a movie at a higher speed, but keeping the pitch of the voices. There are DVD players which support it and various apps which also do so. I think it is a great solution for not spending as much time you’d like on a movie while still finishing it. Now I don’t use the feature often and if I do it’s movie I don’t want to spend time on reviewing them, but I am wondering:

Do you ever watch movies at a higher speed and what is your opinion on using this feature?

The Monday Question: Apps!

The Monday Question

Even though I didn’t really need it I recently decided to get myself a new phone, one which has been titled a “flagship killer”. The phone is made by Oneplus and the model is called One. Specs are impressive with a 5.5 inch screen, 3Gb of RAM, a 13 megapixel camera and 64Gb of memory. Best thing of all that though is the price, which is only 299 euros. Since this is a new company which still has to ramp up production they introduced an invite system in order to get one and it took me a couple of nights of frequenting the forums to get my hands on one.

Last week I received the phone and have been quite happy with it during the last week. You get used to the size of the thing quickly and I already see some advantages of having this phone. The most important one is that I can now easily read and respond to your blog posts, something which was way too slow to do on my old phone (and therefore I never did). So you will be seeing me around commenting more than usual. I might do a separate article on the phone itself describing what I do and don’t like, but the question this week is not about this phone. It is about apps:

Which movie related apps you can’t do without (and would recommend to others)? Continue reading

The Monday Question: Marvel!

The Monday Question

During the last couple of years there is one movie studio which has had quite an impact on the industry, showing that you can create a super universe, which links movies together with characters are willing to see, which is Marvel Studios (owned by Disney). Recently I was thinking that they have been extremely successful with movies like Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, The Avengers and their new franchise Guardians of the Galaxy. They have built up their name and people will go to see their movies simply because they are behind it. It is something we have seen in the past as well with Pixar. It might have changed a bit for that studio with some lesser loved movies like Cars, but I am wondering if Marvel can be compared to that studio whose movies would also be watched blindly:

Do you think Marvel is becoming the new Pixar?

The Monday Question: Background!

The Monday Question

The problem with loving movies is that you really don’t have enough time to watch as much of them as you’d like. Sometimes you have other things to do, but there are always movies which either you have seen or you can easily do something else while watching them. I occasionally start movies knowing I won’t give them my full attention (for example documentaries where the information which is said is most important or movies I’ve watched before) and am wondering if you ever do the same:

Do you ever play movies in the background while you are doing something else?

The Monday Question: Online!

The Monday Question

After asking you about organising your movie collection last week I started wondering if people still invest in their collection. With the current availability of various online ways of watching movies (Netflix, iTunes) I am wondering if you still go out to buy a movie or if the online offerings (if you internet connection allows it) are great alternatives?

I have to admit that I am not big anymore on collecting movies as I rarely rewatch things and if I want to it is only some clicks away. Online all the way for me then.

The Monday Question: Collection!

The Monday Question

As movie lovers I think we all have some nice DVD/Blu Ray collections stored somewhere in our houses. I do too, even though I rarely look at it with a lot of movies being available with he click of a button through services like Netflix or iTunes. As my collection is stored in a bookcase which is inside a closet I am not too bothered about how it all looks and when I have received screener I usually chuck them in there without any form of system. I used to group movies together based on specific actors or put all the kids movies together, but since I don’t spend any time on it anymore I guess that bookshelf is now a mess.
I would like to know how you have stored your collection, but most importantly:

Do you have a way to organize your DVD/Blu Ray collection? (alphabetical/genre/etc.)

The Monday Question: Quit!

The Monday Question

Welcome back to the regular schedule. As you may have noticed my posts have not been as regular for the last two weeks. Not because I didn’t want to post, but simply because I didn’t have the time to prepare as much as I’m normally able to. Also had a week off from work so thought it would be nice to do the same for the blog (basically allowing me to do anything I want with my time (except for a couple of fun activities)). So I went to the movies last week and saw two very different movies: Boyhood and Sex Tape. Reviews of both those movies will be up soon (you might be surprised to hear though that I wasn’t as crazy about Boyhood as everyone seems to be).

But back to business, the question of this week. This past weekend I was looking forward to seeing A Haunted House 2. Yes, you are probably thinking why, but unlike most people I actually enjoyed the first movie and thought its humor was hilarious. So I sat down to watch it and within 20 minutes I knew this would be a movie I simply would not be able to get through. Almost all the jokes I was seeing weren’t funny and after that period I had to do something I almost never do: I switched it off. My question to you for this week:

What is the last movie you didn’t finish?

The Monday Question: Camera!

The Monday Question

It’s question time again at the start of the week. This week I want to ask you about your aspirations as a movie maker. Now I never really had the urge to direct movies/documentaries, but I have always enjoyed the process of filming and editing (mostly vacation movies and a couple of weddings). Last week though I started wondering again (even if it only was a little bit), simply because of the Black Magic Pocket Camera. I had never heard of it, but I think I saw on Criticwire that the price for it was slashed by half. It means you can get very good camera, especially built for making movies for around 500 dollars, which shows that with the right idea everyone can get quite far. Just that development made me wonder for a bit if I should be doing something creative with a camera, but then reality dawned on me that I’d never have the time to think of an interesting story/subject to film or if I had spend the time on executing it all. So my question to you:

Do you have any aspirations to make movies/documentaries yourself?

The Monday Question: Concert!

The Monday Question

Hi, hope you have enjoyed yourself. This past weekend jazz was everywhere over here as it was time for the yearly North Sea Jazz festival. Although I didn’t go to the big performances (Robin Thicke, Pharell and other (more jazz related) artists), I did catch part of them on TV and saw some live performances walking through town. This made me think about something you don’t see reviewed a lot: Documentaries which consisting of a concert. I started to wonder about why that might be the case. Could it be because the people who will watch them in general will see them for the artist(s) and their music, not how it all was shot and therefore will probably love it. Then I started thinking about concert recordings which stand out because they are more than just music and usually it are the ones which have behind the scenes footage. One of my favourites is Dave Chapelle’s Block Party, where it wasn’t just about the music but about the people too, not even the famous ones. So my question:

Do you review concert registrations and if not what would you think be the difficulty in doing so?

The Monday Question: Famous faces!

The Monday Question

The past weekend I went to see Transcendence (I’ll probably write a review for it soon), which has a cast with quite a few famous faces. While watching it though (especially at start of the movie) I initially didn’t mind that, until I suddenly saw Kate Mara appearing. It was just a “throwaway moment”, but because I know her face (in my case from House of Cards) I knew immediately that there was a whole lot more to her character. It wasn’t just some extra and that, even if it only was for a moment, took my out of the movie experience. This made me wonder (even though I know those famous faces are selling the film):

Do you think having a famous actor/actress in a specific role can take some tension away or take you out of a movie because you know they must have a big role? Would you prefer less famous actors/actresses in those type of roles?
