The Monday Question: Preview!

The Monday Question

This past weekend I went to the cinema to see Noah (expect a review soon, but it wasn’t as good as I hoped) and I am not a fan of all the trailers that get shown (which I never watch). When they were all done I was ready to watch the movie and to my shock there was a message that we would now get shown the first 5 minutes of How to Train Your Dragon 2. First I was surprised that they were showing a part of a kids movie before Noah, secondly that it was in Dutch (I hate dubbed versions) and thirdly that I was forced to sit through 5 minutes of something I would not be able to see completely (the movie will be out in July over here). Simply put I was not a fan of this concept. I know it is something which is done more (for example for one of the Batman movies) and I am wondering:

What is your opinion of cinemas showing the first couple of minutes of a movie before the main feature?

The Monday Question: To watch!

The Monday Question

Although I watch hundreds of movie a year (and blog about a lot of those) there are always movies which I would like to see, but I have not seen yet. As a blogger I also read many of your blogs and it happens a lot that one of you writes a glowing review about a movie I have not seen yet. As things go you want to note that movie down as you will have to watch that one in the future. I have been doing that for a long time and my to watch list has therefore grown quite a bit. Even though I do watch movies on that list it usually gets bigger instead of decreasing. I use the watchlist which IMDB offers and there are currently 140 movies on there. Unfortunately there are movies on there which are very hard to find (specific documentaries or non-US films), so I know it will probably never hit that magic zero, but while I can I will try to keep attacking that list to decrease the number. There are also a big number of movies not on the list that I already own, but also have not come around watching yet. So many movies, so little time. It really is a problem of luxury.

Do you have a “to watch” list and how long is it currently?

The Monday Question: Goals!

The Monday Question

I have been blogging about movies for a couple of years now and although I had my moments where I was contemplating to stop I have always managed to find something to inspire and drive me to keep going. When I started out I just wrote about the movies I saw and never thought much about what blogging really meant, the interaction with others, something which gives me the most enjoyment. With some years under my belt though I do notice that I set more goals for myself. Not only in the form of new years resolutions, but also when it comes about trying to set goals. For example doing at least 2 to 3 blogathons a year as I think they help me discover interesting new blogs and of course also have other discover this little place on the internet I’m running. Slowly I have also become more interested in talking to people who work in the industry and if I see a chance to arrange an interview I go for it. The other goal is of course to keep increasing the number of views the site gets each year.

Do set any goals for your blog if so, what are they?

The Monday Question: Education!

The Monday Question

Last week an interesting discussion formed after a Criticwire article asked the question “Do movie critics need filmmaking experience or an understanding of film theory to do their jobs?”. Which I think is something to think about. Dan from Public Transportation Snob also wrote about his way of writing and it is something which you should definitely give a read. Now I do not want you to answer this question (although you can), but on a related note I was wondering:

Do you use any sites or books to learn more about the history and techniques of movies?

I never have studied film or worked in the field I always do try to learn more about it. When I have the time I do read books about movie history and reviews of well known critics as I think it does help you develop your knowledge, which can only improve your writing. I have not focussed yet on the actual filming techniques. Not because I have not been interested in them, but because I have not looked into where to start. As for how to write about movies, I watch them mostly to be either entertained or informed and if a movie manages to do that convincingly I consider it a good movie. That is what I focus on and I might notice a beautifully framed shot or the right use of music, but unless a movie demands it I don’t usually overanalyse them, possibly afraid that it might take away from my enjoyment. I have seen enough movies to know whether or not something is good and if it is bad I can tell you why that is and why I still might have liked it. Do I consider myself extremely knowledgeable on film? No, far from it, but it does not mean I can not give my opinion.

The Monday Question: Best seat!

The Monday Question

When it comes to going to the cinema we all have our preferences when it comes to seating. I know this is not possible everywhere, but here you have the possibility when you buy/reserve tickets online to pick out the seats you want to sit. I always pick seat dead in the middle of the theater as i think that is the best place to enjoy the movie. If I sit too close to the screen I feel that I can’t catch all the details of the film, sit too far and it takes away a bit from the experience. So this week’s question is an easy one:

What to you is the best seat to sit at the cinema?

The Monday Question: Movies on TV!

The Monday Question

Another Monday, another weekend behind us. Have not come around to watching any movies this weekend myself, which does not happen a lot, but other things simply kept me from doing so. A great source for watching movies can be your TV. Every day a lot of movies are being shown, but I was wondering:

Do you ever watch movies when they are broadcast on TV?

For me the answer is pretty simple: If they are being shown on a commercial station where there will be tons of commercial breaks I will not watch and rather find the DVD of the movie if I have it or else just skip it. I can not stand wasting time looking at commercials and being taken out of the movie. If a movie is shown on the BBC or the dutch version of that I will probably watch as they will show the whole movie without any breaks. Interested in your viewing habits when it comes to movies shown on TV.

The Monday Question: Phone!

The Monday Question

Hope you had a good weekend. The only movie I saw this past weekend was Turbo (the DVD had been on the shelf for a while, so had to get around to it eventually), which I wasn’t too crazy about. The rest of my screen watching time I spent on watching Netflix, which I have had now for about a month and which is very good for TV shows. I have been watching both Orange is the New Black and House of Cards (season 2), which both are awesome shows.

This week I would like to know if you have any movie related sounds on your phone? Do you use the alien sound as a text message or the Bond theme as your ringtone?

I used to have a sound from the TV show 24 for text message, but after seeing Her I just had to change it to the sound used for the phone in that movie. You can find that sound on Youtube and with quick use of Google convert it to a mp3. Here is where you can find it (although I have cut it down to making the sound once). It is such an awesome and subtle sound, which I enjoy hearing.

The Monday Question: Oscars!

The Monday Question

After the past weekend there is only one thing most movie bloggers will be talking about: The Oscars. Personally I am one of the exceptions who don’t really follow them and who will have a quick look at the winners, but that is usually about it. But I am interested in your thoughts about them.

What did you think of this year’s Oscars?

The Monday Question: Prop!

The Monday Question

In the movies hundreds of props are used. Often these are real world items which don’t stand out, but for some movies custom items are made. it can be a movie car, a special computer or some magical box. They can be a source of wonder and sometimes a thing we might want to have.

Which movie prop (which basically looks good but doesn’t do anything, so no time travelling in your DeLorean then) would you like to have?

I saw Her yesterday and would really like to have the little phone type thing he uses, which kind of looks like a cigarette box with cameras. I just love the look of the thing and think it would great on my DVD shelves.

The Monday Question: Favorite character!

The Monday Question

Another Monday and time for a new question. Cinema has produced so many amazing characters through the years, some which have become iconic. So today I want to ask you a very simple question:
Who is your favorite movie character?

Picking only one was quite difficult but I think I would have to go with Indiana Jones, mainly because it is a character who is smart, is cool when he is out on an adventure and also offers lots to laugh about. Continue reading
