Midnight in Paris (2011)

Woody Allen has been making movies for a long time. He made his first movie, What’s up, Tiger Lily? in 1966 and 35 years later he is still going strong. I’m not always a big fan of his type of humour but I usually give his movies a try. Is Midnight in Paris worth watching?

The movie tells the story of Gil (Owen Wilson), who is a scriptwriter in Hollywood. Together with his girlfriend Inez (Rachel McAdams) and her parents they are visiting Paris. Gil has always dreamt of living there and writing a book as the city inspires him. His girlfriend doesn’t share that feeling and seems to be more interested in Paul (Michael Sheen) who is extremely proud of his knowledge of art and wines. After a wine tasting party Gil decides not to join Inez and Paul on their way back to the hotel and to just walk the streets. As the clock strikes twelve something happens and Gil seems to be transported to another era.

Allen manages to inject this movie with a sense of wonder that captivates the viewer, partly thanks to Wilson who is excellent in this film. He is bewildered by what is happening to him, but enjoys it to the fullest. The way the sets look and the characters are dressed seem to make Paris look even more magical. There are many characters in this movie that not everyone will know (I didn’t know them all either), which will result in some missed jokes, but this is not an issue.

Midnight in Paris has charm and that’s the reason it won me over. It’s these type of movies why I love cinema so much. Whether you like Woody Allen or not, he has delivered an excellent movie.

Score: 9

  1. This film is every where at the moment. I seem to be the only person in the world that hasn’t seen it!! It sounds awesome and seeing as you liked it too Nostra I am in!!

  2. I really, really want to see Midnight in Paris though for some silly reason my local isn’t showing it! I’ve checked upcoming films and it’s not there… Hopefully I’ll find a way to see it πŸ™‚

  3. It’s a pleasant time enough. I think some of the comedy can get lost with the rapid fire one-liners and obviously, humor is always so subjective. Good review Nostra!

    • It’s one of the most subjective genres in my opinion, but as it’s obvious from this review it wasn’t just the humor of it, but also the way Paris is presented. Thanks!

    • I like him and although his role was tiny in this it did stand out…it was hilarious! Nice to hear you share the same opinion on it. This movie really has been getting a lot of love!
