Bridesmaids (2011)

Chris Rock once had this part in one of his shows where he talked about rivalry between women and that no matter where they work they always turn everything into some Dynasty type thing, thinking that the other woman is trying to destroy them. Bridesmaids takes that thought, mixes it with a bit of The Hangover and adds some Sex and the City to end up with an interesting result.

This movie has a big cast of women, but the focus here is really on Annie, played by Kristen Wiig. She’s with a guy only for the sex (he’s not interested in a relationship), lives together with two roommates who are completely crazy and has had to shut down her bakery. When she hears that her best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph) is getting married she excited, but when she sees Helen (Rose Byrne) a rivalry between them grows. It’s the source for a lot of comedy, but another woman who steals the show is Megan (Melissa McCarthy), who is the future sister-in-law. She can be compared to the type of role Zach Galifianakis played in the Hangover. The type of situations these women and up in are so hilarious, with my absolute favorite a gross out one in a bridal shop.

Despite the number of women I don’t think this is a movie for women, it’s one that can be enjoyed by everyone. The rivalry is played to perfection and Wiig is perfectly cast for her role. She’s seems to be funny without trying to be. A love interest adds a bit extra to the movie, away from all the Bridesmaids stuff. I you loved The Hangover I’m pretty sure you will also enjoy this one.

Score: 8

  1. I guess it does a movie for everyone. Although I think I prefer this movie than Hangover 2. Glad that there’s a movie that can mock women’s competition and wedding theme 🙂

  2. There’s not enough of what you really liked about ‘Bridesmaids’ in your review. I can tell from the score that you enjoyed it, but what about it? I guess that’s the only bit of criticism I have. I was really anticipating this movie when it came out in theaters and it didn’t disappoint. It’s still my favorite comedy this year…although I’m hearing 50/50 is pretty good.

    • thanks for that feedback, really appreciate it. Sometimes I don’t take enough time to oroperly articulate my thoughts about a movie. I liked the unique characters and that they all had their flaws. Also liked the little love story, which added some more depth and volume to the movie. A lot of the humor also was about embarrasing moments, which in this case was funny.

  3. Nostra, I recommend You watch The IT Crowd cause it’s pretty awesome. As for this movie, I decided to skip it because this sort of comedy is just not my thing. So, for a change not adding to the watch list 😉

    • I don’t watch too many TV shows, so really don’t know much about it. Yeah, comedy is personal so no problem not watching. I give you permission not to watch it 😉
