When you think of Hollywood you think of celebrities, glitter, glamour and of course, movies and television. It’s a world that appeals to a lot of people and some of them actually try to chase their dreams to make it big. Perseverance is important and even when you get your first big role or your script turned into a movie it isn’t a guarantee that you have secured your spot. It’s a hard world and keeping yourself motivated is a must. The Table is a documentary about a group of talented individuals (some who have made it, others who just started out) who do just that as they meet up every Thursday to help each other out. Director Ana Barredo decided to follow the group for a year and show just how inspiring this talented group of individuals is. Continue reading

Warrior (2011)
As stated in last week’s Monday Question I’m not a big fan of sports movies. I’m also not a fan of MMA fights as I think it’s a bit too brutal compared to something like the K-1 tournament. So you might be wondering why I even bothered watching this movie. There is basically one reason: Tom Hardy. After his amazing performance in Bronson he’s been on my radar and was interested to see more of him. Is Warrior one of those sports movies I actually enjoyed? Find out after the jump. Continue reading
30 Minutes or Less (2011)
Director Ruben Fleischer made a great movie with Zombieland. It was funny, sometimes gross, but overall very enjoyable. With 30 Minutes or Less Fleischer reunited with Jesse Eisenberg. With no zombies in this movie, does it manage to reach the same heights as Zombieland did? Continue reading
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
As I’ve stated before I’m not that big a fan of movies based on comics. I do watch most of them, but I hardly feel I missed out on something when I see it a couple of months later. Captain America is a character I didn’t know before this movie, so going into this I was like a blank slate ready to learn more about this superhero. Did it manage to wow me or is it just a movie which had to be made to get to the Avengers movie? Continue reading
Page One: A Year Inside the New York Times (2011)
Newspapers have never been part of my daily routine. It’s not that I am not interested in reading them, but I think there are just too much other things competing for my attention. Even when I’m on the train to work I’d rather watch a movie than reading one of the free newspapers. I usually get my news on TV in the evening and from various websites during the day. Judging by this documentary I’m not the only one.

Buck (2011)
I’m personally not a big fan of horses. I have to go to the riding school once a week as the kids wanted lessons and they enjoy it. This means I regularly have to get close to them and saddle them, but it really isn’t for me. One thing you do notice is that they all have their personalities. For example, there is this one horse that always seems to be grumpy and you always have to keep your eye on him or he might shove you. Despite not liking horses much I was very interested in seeing this documentary about Buck Brannaman. Basically he is the horse whisperer (he was the consultant for that movie) Continue reading
The Guard (2011)
Sometimes an opening scene of a movie manages to paint a clear picture of what a movie is about in just seconds. The Guard is an example of a film which manages to do so in an exquisite way (small spoiler coming up). A car with a couple of young men who are speeding, crashes at the exact spot where sergeant Gerry Boyle (Brendan Gleeson) is already waiting in his police car. He frisks one of the unconscious (or dead) men who has been thrown out of the car, finds some drugs, throws half of them away and takes an XTC-pill that’s part of the package. It’s immediately obvious that this is not the most normal cop and that The Guard is a very dark enjoyable comedy. Continue reading
Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011)
As stated in this week’s Monday Question about guilty pleasures I can really enjoy the Transformers movies. Although I did watch the cartoons and had some of the toys as a kid, I never had strong feelings about them. The cartoons were entertaining and it was fun transforming cars into robots, but I wouldn’t be able to tell you much about the names of the characters or even what the cartoons were about. Only thing I know is that the Autobots are good and the Decepticons aren’t. After the success of the first two Transformers movies, Michael Bay ends the trilogy with Dark of the Moon. Not much has changed really, it’s still about robots beating the crap out of each other. Continue reading
Melancholia (2011)
Danish director Lars von Trier is someone who divides audiences and critics and I know a couple of people who really don’t want to watch his movies. Personally I had only seen Dogville, starring Nicole Kidman, which I thought was very unique and which I quite liked (8/10). Melancholia is his new film, which isn’t a movie everyone will like either. If you are feeling down, then this won’t be the movie to cheer you up. Continue reading
Bridesmaids (2011)
Chris Rock once had this part in one of his shows where he talked about rivalry between women and that no matter where they work they always turn everything into some Dynasty type thing, thinking that the other woman is trying to destroy them. Bridesmaids takes that thought, mixes it with a bit of The Hangover and adds some Sex and the City to end up with an interesting result. Continue reading
